Learning Goals
Students will:
- Deepen Conceptual Understanding: Explain and justify a mathematical idea in their own words.
- Strengthen Metacognition: Notice where understanding is solid and where it needs refinement.
- Practice Mathematical Communication: Articulate definitions, reasoning, and applications clearly.
- Guarded AI Collaboration: Engage an AI that listens, asks clarifying questions, and presses for deeper explanation.\
Materials
- ChatGPT account with voice mode
- Assigned customGPT
Task
Students engage in a voice-to-voice conversation with AI, explaining and clarifying a math topic. If solving problems:
- Show work on scratch paper
- Speak steps aloud while solving
Deliverables
- Any scratch paper used
- A shared chat link of their conversation
Lesson Structure
[10 mins] Introduce the Purpose
Frame the activity around active recall.
Explain: When you explain an idea out loud, you quickly notice which parts make sense—and which do not. Teaching forces organization, precision, and reasoning.
Tell students they will use AI as a role-play partner. The AI acts as a peer who wants to learn about [math_topic] from them.
Demonstrate how to:
- Use voice mode in ChatGPT
- Share the conversation link when finished
[30 mins] Prepare + Teach
Step 1 — Human-First Thinking (No AI Yet)
Students first review the math concept independently. They prepare a short lesson for their “eager peer” GPT.
They begin teaching by explaining:
- Key definitions
- Important formulas
- Why those formulas work
- How to apply them
If walking through an example:
- Solve on scratch paper
- Speak each step aloud
- Justify why each step is valid
Students complete the assignment when their AI peer demonstrates solid understanding and says:
“Thank you for teaching me about [math_topic].”
